A Lazy Weekend. . . With Task-Oriented Shoes

Since I wrote here last, it snowed heavily for a day — we accumulated something like 15 centimetres, so enough to impede mobility and encourage a lazy weekend. I cancelled my appointment with the dental hygienist and snuggled in with my knitting. (Sweater almost finished — photographs later this week.)

And during that weekend at home, I worked out in the gym; I listened to a Nine read the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone while I knit; I helped the same Nine sew a wall hanging/stationery organizer with fabric (and pockets!) we cut from her Granddad’s old shirts.

I started making a Fermented Sourdough Bread, which turns out to have an astonishingly long process, although not much more hands-on time than normal (less, in fact, if you still make a bread that requires kneading for ten minutes).

Went for a walk in the neighbourhood and took a few random photos of a lovely old building

Stopped at the florist’s next door to this gorgeous bit of heritage and ordered a small bouquet — forsythia, muscari, pussy willows, all the spring lovelies I could have gathered from my old garden for free, I couldn’t help thinking — which I picked up on the way home. Outside the shop, the owner had scattered rose petals, thus. . .

While I was admiring this sweet diversion from the snow, I noticed the mirror on the adjoining business’s door and couldn’t resist. Note the oh-so-fashionable footwear. Also note that I stayed upright the entire walk, thanks to said footwear. . .

We closed out the weekend with a Bowling and Pizza Party thrown by our realtor (an annual event). I will not share my score with you although it would introduce a comic note this post might benefit from. . .

As you’ll note, the Bowling happened in the Black-Light section of the Lanes — which makes this post’s second pair of footwear even more, well, more. . . .right?

By now, it will be very clear that one thing I didn’t do this weekend was write a blogpost. I’m rethinking the regular Monday postings, actually. I tend to think I’m going to write a post over the weekend, and that’s turning out not to be the case more often than not. For today, I offer you this weekend report, written as I’ve watched the sun emerge from a dark sky to light fires all across the downtown skyline. And we’re off . . . another new week. What’s ahead for you?

I want to live where there are rose petals scattered around my door. What enchantment!
Our anniversary today with lunch over-looking the Thames from above(The Shard) and a massage at 7 tonight. Then, fun part of the week over…working on preparing taxes to give to the accountant for the next several days. One of the "lucky" ones who has to file in two countries. Oh joy.
Teaching the 9 year old how to create something useful with fabric must be so fun. Those moments will be with her always.
Really anxious to see the sweater on. What a lovely creation.
Being snowed in once in awhile is a lovely thing, isn't it?

Happy Anniversary! I'd love to be lunching just across the river, in the Restaurant of the Tate Modern. Not as dramatic a view, I know, but have you ever had their olives? The best!
I'm fine with being snowed in occasionally, as long as it melts away within two or three days, as it has this time.
And Dottoressa, I'd take those temps! No rose petals necessary 😉

Bowling in the black light must be a challenge! Fun event though…
Its sunny today here and I hope your snow is melting so that you can get out and about…and if not…more time to knit!

It was fun, and between the black light and the beer and the lasers that kept triggering a Foul warning, there were lots of excuses for my poor score 😉

Whatever your bowling score was, mine would probably be worse! We are off to the UK in a couple of days. Friends are telling me that a Siberian front has swept the nation; the Weather Network tells me that temps will range from -1 to +5 Celsius, with, yes, a little bit of snow. I think we can bear that!

It won't be cold by Ottawa standards, but my daughter's Instagram post today featured enough snow on the beach near their home (near Rome) to build a snowman and make snow angels. A rare occurrence!

Did you peek at my daughter's Instagram post from Rome today? Snow on the beach!
I must tell N that you're reading Harry Potter too — it's been years since I have. There's so much pleasure in rereading favourite books (and I remember that your mom likes these very much as well, doesn't she?)
We have the regular ten-pin bowling as well, and there were several 10-pin lanes at this place, but in Canada (I'm not sure if it exists elsewhere) we also have 5-pin, much easier for our Nine to join in. . .

Wenonah Apartments – what an amazing building. Do you know its history?
Bowling is so not my thing but glad to hear that fun was had.
Yes, The Beast From The East is heading to the UK from Siberia. You can tell just how unused we are to -4'c temperatures by the fact that the trains are stopping early and the media are standing by with their hyperboles. I do fancy hunkering down with my knitting and a box set but, as decorator is coming tomorrow to freshen up the living room, that room is currently devoid of TV and soft seating. Make have to take to my bed…

Like the first shoe pic – not so sure about the bowling ones…

I've been reading a bit about the apartment's history — might have to post something later.
I hope you're staying warm — The Beast from the East! Terrifying 😉

And those bowling shoes — I hasten to point out that I rented them at the bowling alley. I do think they're rather nerdy-cool though. . .

I went down a rabbit hole reading about the Wenonah and surrounding neighbourhood, almost took an apartment but sadly they do not allow cats. 🙂

What type of boots are you wearing here? Do they have a 'gripping' sole or do you add Yaktrax or something like?

Ha! Me too — isn't it interesting? Did you read about the stained glass windows? What about Dock Lunch cafe? I'm going to check it out this week, since it's only four blocks away.
These boots are Sperrys, a kind of duck shoe with a felted wool above the corrugated rubber part and a warm lining. The sole has pretty decent traction. I do have a pair of Yaktrax, but I didn't need them on the weekend — actually, I was shocked to see how well the sidewalks had been cleaned.

It is criminal not to allow cats.

The blacklight bowling looks like such fun! I lived on the East Coast for a while and remember the anxiety of trying to get around on foot when the ground was icy. Don't miss that part of winter! I appreciate your "artist's eye" view of the local building.

Thank you, Frances! It was a fab celebration.

You have mentioned the olives at the Tate Modern restaurant before…will put that on my Spring list of "things to be discovered".

I am actually envious of your snow. It's already been in the 80'sF here, and I hesitate to think what summer will be like. My very first date was bowling. I brought a quick end to the date when I dropped the ball on his foot and broke a toe. Not my best sport!

Oh dear! Was there a second date?
