Happy Birthday to my beautiful, sensitive, funny, ambitious, hard-on-herself, contagiously fun but also occasionally fierce, thoughtful, engaged and engaging daughter (no, I didn’t come close to capturing her, but that’s a quick sketch). This is one of those birthdays with the potential to invite self-evaluation and some feeling of dismay at the increasing speed with which one is moving through life. Rhi (her nickname — the shortening of a name I was positive wouldn’t ever suffer or accommodate shortening — hah!), by nature, is likely to indulge in this self-evaluation and perhaps in the dismay, but against that temptation, I’ll point out that in the last year alone she has moved cities, changed jobs, taken courses and added certifications relevant to her field, become a runner again, made new friends, learned new neighbourhoods, and, last but not least, introduced us to her new boyfriend who, uncannily, shares the same birthday (not year, though, that would be too much!). Tonight they’re going for dinner to celebrate; tomorrow we’re having a birthday dinner for her at our place. Meanwhile, please join me in wishing a big Happy Birthday to this gorgeous young woman — I’m keen to see what you’ll manage this year, Rhiannon. Lots of love, sweetie!
It sounds like the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. 🙂
Happy Birthday, Rhiannon!
Happy birthday Rhi’bs
Your daughter is gorgeous and looks and sounds a lot like you( I hate when people say that about me and your mother, I have a feeling your gorgeous Rhiannon will take it as a compliment as it is definitely and sincerely intended).
Happy Birthday Rhiannon!
She’s lovely, happy birthday from me too! Patricia
Rhiannon, you have done more in this past year than I think I’ve done in 5! You are as inspiring as your mother. Happy Birthday!!
I’ll pass on all these wishes and thanks for the compliments aimed my way as well.
Congratulations to YOU. One does not become all that without wholly devoted parents. A child’s birthday is a time of deep remembering- of the joy, excitement and hard work of that day. The day of your personal miracle.
On my friend’s children’s birthdays, I usually give a gift to the mother. It’s a special day for her as well.
A job well done, an MBE is on it’s way (My Bloody Effort)
I must admit that I too am starting to reap the rewards of an older child, well worth the struggle, or is it that time is a great healer?
Your daughter is beautiful! She sounds like an energetic, bright, and fun individual and I see you are quite proud of her. I hope she had the happiest of happy birthdays. I love the knitting you have shown us lately.
Happy Birthday kiddo.
Happy B’day Rhi! Did you name her after the Steve Nicks song? The timing of her age would be about right….
Karen: The Fleetwood Mac song is just a happy coincidence — we should all be so lucky to have a cool namesake song. (I actually found it in the Welsh Book of Mabigonion.)
