When last we saw our intrepid travellers, they were on a night train to Barcelona. Let us rejoin them as they disembark . .
They need a moment to take in the station . .
T
And to admire their wisdom of packing so lightly. See the Male Traveller guarding the two bags while his Female Partner takes a photograph. . .
Both agree that the grillwork has a different weight or texture to it that seems more Spanish to them. . .
Both agree that they love the grandiose architecture of railway stations, expressive as it seems to be of an optimism that accompanied a particular period of industrial capitalism. . .
And what does that clock say? Time to find your hotel and check in so at you can walk down to the beach, stroll around, admire your good fortune, and then find a terrace to sit and eat and order a bottle of Cava, a bottle of bubbly at less than 20 Euros. Let it be registered: summer has begun for our Two Travellers, right here in Barcelona.
Ahhhhh. . .
There is such a disciplined ornateness in the architecture you shot, and I feel so much how you eye moves. I love 'traveling' with you!
Oh, this is exactly right. . .. A "disciplined ornateness" indeed. And it pleases me so much to have you say what you do here. That is exactly what I hope to convey, thank you!
Isn't the architecture in Barcelona different from that of France or of Madrid? Cava and papas bravas are excellent on Catalan terraces. Are you staying in Barcelona the whole time or are you going to explore the Costa Brava a bit? You look happy and relaxed in your photo. Now I get to blog travel with you.
We only have six days in Barcelona, sadly, and then go back to France (Bordeaux) but we definitely hope to return. Yes, so very different. Fascinating!
We loved Barcelona and look forward to returning.
Thanks for commenting, fabric fan. It's always a delight to have a new ader, and when I get home I'll be sure to spend more time checking out your blog.
Wonderful!! You look so relaxed and happy. I love train stations too…so much space for possibility.
Yes, they whisper of possibility, beckon . .
I too love the high ceilings of train stations…and the way that voices echo in them. You are looking so relaxed.
Places for dreaming, aren't they?!
Glad to hear that you're in Barna and have had your first glass of Cava — when I was there last year I was surprised at how often the Catalanes drink Cava. In Madrid, it's still a "celebration" drink, not the normal aperitif like it is in Catalña.
I don't want in any way to be a killjoy, but I feel obliged as a resident of Spain to warn you to NEVER take your hands off your bags. That moment in the photo when Pater was looking away could well have been the moment someone swooped in and grabbed your bag.
A friend visiting last summer from California was nearly driven buggy by the constant refrain of "don't leave your bag there" — but the sad fact is, if you want to keep it, keep your hands on it. You'll notice that the local ladies all have their purses in their laps when they're out on a terrace or in a busy restaurant. I've even heard of people having wallets taken out of bags that were between their feet on the floor!
OK, that's the end of my public safety rant. I want you to have a goooooood time; I rant because I care. 😉
We both appreciate the caution from someone who knows the city. Paul has good reflexes and is a fast runner, but I do take your point, and we are being much more careful. It's always better once the cases are safely stowed in the hotel room . . .
You look so relaxed! Enjoy your stay in Barcelona!
Thanks!
