This past week or two have been busy, but I’ve continued to post. I’ve even, as I mentioned in my Monday Miscellany, begun a long-ish bit that connects some dots from my Italian class all the way to a Japanese artist whose work I saw in Bordeaux. Here’s a peek at that work, just to whet your appetite.
But not only has this past week or so been busy (kayaking; biking; baby-sitting; watering the plants — we’ve had no measurable rain for over 40 days here in The City Formerly Known as Rain City; and fretting about wildfires). . . but this weekend, as my title hints, I begin living with a septuagenarian.
A septuagenarian, mind you, who recently sent me this Selfie from the Stand-Up Paddleboard I bought him to celebrate his Substantial Age. A very fit 70, is my guy, despite the scare he gave me, 12 years ago this very weekend.ย In retrospect, a tempest in a teapot, luckily.
Anyway, this fellow deserves some celebration, and his kids have arranged some of that, so I’m pressing “Pause” on posting, at least until the middle of next week. It’s the long weekend here in BC — with the catchy name of BC Long Weekend, seriously — first Monday in August does it every year, a very nice tradition if you like highway traffic and busy beaches, but also extended family picnics, cousins swimming together, evenings ’round a swimming pool, chatting. . . .
So I’m pressing Pause to savour, without distractions . . .
And perhaps you’ll join me in wishing a certain Paddle-boarder a Happy Birthday! Looking good, my love, looking good!
xo,

Thanks! He was ushered into his next decade with much love and happy celebration.
Happy Birthday, Paul! Welcome to the Septuagenarian club. I joined it last year. ๐
Hope you have a wonderful time with your family.

I’m passing all these greetings along — much appreciated. We had a great weekend.
I’m impressed! I’m 74 and I can’t stand and paddle board. Not flexible enough and my balance isn’t so great–so cheers to your husband! Have a wonderful celebration.

I’m impressed you’d still think about doing so at 74 — I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet, but if we get to a lake rather than the ocean, I might give it a try — not sure I’d be able to stand from kneeling.
I just read your post from 12 years ago. !!! OMGoodness! Today’s photo shows such good health, vigor, and strength. Adding an extra “hale and hearty” to Pater’s birthday greeting!
Celebrate your milestone birthday in style and good health! Happy BD!

Thanks from my guy

Yes, he’s very healthy — as he was then, except for that evening of fainting. Thanks for the extra greeting!
A happy birthday to Paul! Seventy is the new fifty.
Or not.

Paul says “Hvala”!
Happiest of birthdays to your hubby! So glad that the scare 12 years ago was just that and that he’s hale and hearty now and able to enjoy that paddleboard! Enjoy your Pause! We all need those once in awhile.
Author
Thanks, Elaine! Except for this quick little foray to respond here, I’m appreciating the Pause. Even managing to stay away from Instagram for the most part.
Well I thought it was Burt Lancaster for a moment there . Happy Birthday Paul & have a good break both of you .

Hahaha! Thanks for the chuckle and the birthday wishes!

Good to know there are so many examples of good company in this demographic.
A very, very happy birthday to you, Paul!

He says Thank You, Lisa!
Happy birthday to your amazing spouse!

Thanks! He is pretty amazing, it’s true ๐
Happy birthday, Paul!
I had no idea he’d given you such a scare 12 years ago – thank goodness it turned out to be nothing a little (a lot!) of fluid and rest couldn’t cure.
I’m planning to take up stand up paddle next summer (want to drop a little more weight and up my strength – weights are coming hopefully this week along with the rest of our container) as we have a lovely bay that is a popular SUP spot here in Cascais. It’s great fun to watch the paddlers as they successfully (and sometimes not so successfully) navigate their new skills.

Thanks Carol — in retrospect it wasn’t anything serious, but the density of feelings took some time to dissipate. . .
I’m curious to try it, but it does seem to demand a fair bit of core strength and good balance. . . Nice to have a suitable spot so close at hand.
Happy birthday to Paul! As an over 70, Iโm wishing I could hit pauseโฆbut I canโt so onward!

Onward it is (my turn in 2 years. . . )
Being a November baby, I have always been envious of those who can celebrate their birthdays with a sunny picnic, a swim or paddle, or a lazy afternoon in a hammock with a book. Although a bit hazy/smoky here (just a little south of Vancouver), it was still a lovely summer weekend and a great time to be outdoors. A belated Happy Birthday to your Paul.

Is it smokier today where you are? It was quite thick in the Okanagan, with ash coating surfaces overnight. . . and visibly landing on our clothes during the day. Glad to be home, but some of the smoke seems to have accompanied us. . .
Happy Happy Bday Paul!!!
Heartiest of Happy Birthdays to Paul. And a merry break to you.
