This is what I wore for my first haircut in five months (five months!). . . Levi 501s and a new t-shirt by a Japanese company called Homspun, bought in a shop that sells the most beautifully simple and simply beautiful Japanese household goods and basic garments. . . and is three minutes away from the door of condo (that includes my elevator time! — it’s dangerously close!). . . I haven’t really missed shopping per se, but the experience of chatting to attentive and interesting Shopowner and Sales Assistants (socially distanced, and yes, I wore a face mask) in a delightfully curated, aesthetically pleasing store. . . Well, you know that expression, “I’ve really got to get out more”. . . . The shopping and haircut combination was more satisfactory in regards to “getting out more” than the trips to the dentist and endodontist 😉
In case you’re curious about the Before and the After,
this is Before. . .
and here is the After

If you’re at all interested in how and when I embraced my grey after years of colouring, this post from May 2016 summarizes that transition, with photos. . .
We’re off for a bike ride now . . . but I’m working on a few posts that are more substantive than what’s been happening here lately. Thanks for sticking ’round in the meantime. And perhaps you’d like to tell me if you’ve managed to get your hair cut or styled yet since the shutdown. . . Or whether you’ve “got out more” . . .
And if you’d like to get out more but don’t feel it’s safe to do so yet, you might consider the virtual Book Club Party my friend Sue is hosting in her backyard. Looks as if it might be the event of the season — maybe I’ll see you there.
Your natural beauty shines out in those glorious curls! Glad you were able to safely get a haircut. I still have not ventured beyond my neighborhood so no haircuts for either myself or my husband. Fortunately, I had a haircut just before the quarantine but still… At least, it's an opportunity to let the grey grow out and we can see what it looks like.

Doesn't it feel wonderful having your hair done?
I had mine cut this week too!
I like that casual and simple outfit and the tee looks very soft…enjoy your ride.
I was reading your previous post this morning and came back to say it inspired me to call my dentist about a tooth that had been bothering me (on and off for 5 years…through endodondist, periodontist, and many discussions with dentist…and 'on' for the past few weeks). Called at 10:15, in the chair at 11:45, tooth out at noon, now 12:50 CDT). Still frozen but happy, so thank you! (I think an extraction is the easiest of all the many procedures I have had done over the years).
Your hair looks great and doesn't your head feel lighter? I had mine cut on Tuesday although the shops here have been open for a while. I was already due for a cut when things closed down, my hair is thick and heavy and grows like a weed, the pile on the floor was shocking.
Your hair looks great, Frances! I'm still coloring my hair, medium brown, and the long roots during quarantine did not inspire confidence that my natural hair would look good. My former color was very dark brown, and my grey is an ugly steel color, not white or silver. I don't like the salt-and-pepper effect. I've colored it myself a couple of times with OK results, but I was overdue for a cut in February so it is past my shoulders now. I've been tempted to whack some off myself – how much worse could it look?
I'm in Boston and we are doing quite well here in terms of the virus, so I may venture to the salon soon. I am very tired of maintaining the color but as long as I'm working I will probably keep it up.
I happened to see Tracy Ullman on Colbert. Her hair looks fantastic, dark with flashes of silver. (She does wonderful impressions of Angela Merkel.)
Your hair looks great! I got mine cut about a week ago, for the first time since February, but I had been intentionally growing it out, so I probably will not be back in the salon for a few more months. Salons have been open here since early May but I have been more cautious than many, with good reason to my mind as cases are increasing in my area, although a re still not as bad as some people. I have seen the dentist though. I have terrible dentist fear, but my dentist is very cautious, and very kind so I feel I must keep up lest I become overwhelmed. I was there the second day he reopened, although just for maintenance. Work will need to be done, but not yet, and I am thankful for that.
Your curls are gorgeous! I also just got a haircut after 3 months in iso – but I decided to embrace the grey that can now be seen as I have not been colouring at home… and so I went for a short pixie for the growing out stage. I may change my mind but I am kind of loving it (the salt and pepper grey and the short cut, so low maintenance!) A gift of iso for me has been the freedom to embrace my authentic self. Gigi
My appointment is booked. Much to my surprise, my hairdresser rang me up and offered me an appointment! She must have sensed the unruliness developing on my head. Only ten more days to go. That shop, so close to home, would be my undoing. My only shopping luxury has been half a dozen delightful candles, in an actual shop. The online has proved quite delightful, waiting for the package to arrive and I am always, always in to receive it. Enjoy the pleasure of a newly coiffed bonce.
I love the light tee with the light jeans and dark belt, Frances. Looks super cool. And you hair looks great. I envy your curls. My mop changes daily, it seems. I'm so glad my appointment is a week from today!
P.S. Thanks for the shout-out. Hoping you'll be making the "trip" to the party.
SLF: Thanks! And yes, a good opportunity to lose some standards that might not be serving us well. For some, that will be hair colour; for others, facials, pedicures, perhaps monthly wardrobe acquisition that makes much less sense now. Good health, and the health of others, puts all the rest in perspective.
Hostess: Thank you! Your cut makes grey hair look very elegant.
Georgia: Wow! I'm an influencer. . . although that's a very niche market. . . 😉
I've only ever had one extraction, only because the attempt at a root canal didn't work and the tooth couldn't be saved. I was sad about it, tbh, but I agree that as a procedure it was very easy. I think the aftermath can be painful or uncomfortable, so I hope you're feeling as happy about it today (i.e. hope you have lots of meds 😉
Marie: It's so personal, the hair-colour-or-not decision. I wasn't ready, until I was, even through the last few years of every five or six weeks. . . and now I'm very happy with my grey and can't imagine spending the time or money on changing it. So lucky to have a choice! (I just Googled Tracey Ullman's hair, and it's great!)
Mardel: We've been very, very fortunate here in British Columbia — I believe our per capita numbers for Covid-19 may be the lowest in North American, according to some analysis I read the other day. As unruly as it might get, my need for a haircut wouldn't be desperate enough to risk a salon otherwise. The tooth situation, of course, couldn't be ignored . . . so glad we've arrested the infection before it spread too far into jaw, etc. . . Discernment is tough, right now, but I'm willing to err on Better Safe than Sorry. Good to know you are following the same. . .
We’ve both had our hair done and you’ve had your dental work and soon I will have my hygienist appointment…we are catching up on things that had to be postponed! I yearn to go shopping but need nothing!!
Gigi: Perfect! That worked really well for me in my transition — and I bet it looks great, that salt-and-pepper coif! Très chic! And if it aligns more closely with your authentic self, so freeing as well!
Annie Green: My hairdresser did the same, calling to book me in. I couldn't have been more ready!
Sue B: Thanks! And I'll be very curious to see what you and your stylist decide on for your new hair look. (yes, I will be doing my best to make it — should be fun 😉
Amazing what a good hair cut does. Tame the curls. Everybody is in the same boat and we all look a bit shaggy until we get the cut.
Susan
Love your outfit and hair! I found that as the weeks went by my normally poker straight hair developed a bit of a wave – by no means a curl, but definitely a wave! So when I finally made it to my hairdresser last week, I just had it trimmed and am enjoying the new look. Never did colour my hair so I haven't had to worry about that.
Btw, perhaps we'll be on the same virtual flight to the backyard book party!
Frances in Sidney
I do love your hair. I have had a hair trim, and it did feel wonderful. Curly hair was easier to maintain during lockdown. Nail scissors were used a wee bit on the sides, I was very careful. I do get low lights done about every seven weeks, and do keep silver/white streaks in the front. A compromise or a vanity ;D
Ali
Hostess: Yes, catching up on the maintenance. . . and really, I don't need anything either. . .
Susan: And we discover that, even shaggy, we're okay 😉
Frances: I like that — thanks to Covid, hair revealed its own style!
And I'll be delighted if we end up as seatmates on that flight. . .
Ali: It's true that curly hair can hide more than straight hair (although I've never got to test out the latter! 😉 My daughter chopped hers a bit as well (really thick, curly), but I resisted. I can imagine getting low lights at some point just for fun, especially once my hair goes all monotone and the lowlights would add some texture. . . (but probably not; I'm getting lazy 😉
I find your hair amazing indeed-it is beautiful after a haircut, but it was quite nice even without it. I have so many things, chores and appointments postponed (hairdresser and a pedicure were squezeed in a short window of quiet) -impossible to catch up. But, amazingly, we are still coping, in a way
Dottoressa
I only have one thing to say…
HELLO LOVELY!!!!
Dottoressa: Thanks for the kind words re my hair. I bet your toes were happy for the treat and you're looking your usual elegant self, and glad to hear you're still coping, but I know what you mean about all that has been postponed. xo
Lisa: Hello back at you, Lovely! 😉 xo
