I thought I would have posted by now, but the flight was long and delayed and I missed a connection…and the little one’s been sick since I got here, so I’ve been trying to help as much as I can. Jet lag hit hard, and the combination of travel tension, suitcase carting and backpack wearing, and granddaughter hefting and cuddling did something to my shoulder that has me guarding my movements carefully and popping Aleve…
Today, though, I’m finally feeling caught up on my sleep and The Roman Toddler is feeling a bit better, and we had an absolutely splendid day in the sunshine, culminating in an opera evening for my daughter and I. Couldn’t have been a more perfect day, and perhaps I’ll get to tell you more about it later, but I’m Soooo tired. I’ll just show you a few photos for now, and do my best to get back here soon. Okay?
The sheer pleasure of walking in Rome, on a sunny day in January, and seeing it through a toddling granddaughter’s eyes…
My daughter and I at the opera, Rossini’s La Cenerentola –this production might just be the prettiest of any of the 40+ operas I’ve seen. Such a delectable colour story!
I know it’s a meagre post, but I also know you’ll understand that time with the family here is precious. I’ll try to post again very soon.
No need for apologies, just lovely to hear from you! Oh to have morning coffee overlooking the rooftops of Rome, perfect! Sorry to hear your journey was rather stressful and that Frankie's been unwell. Hope you're both feeling much better now. How wonderful to have an evening at the opera with your daughter and to run through the gardens at the Villa Borghese …. I've strolled through them! Too hot to run when we visited … not that I'm much of I runner! đ
Take care and enjoy the rest of your stay.
Rosie
You're right, Rose. In so many months here, I'd find it too hot to run. And really, the park is beautifully suited to walking as well, and that might be even better for people-watching!
Overseas travel trials, jet lag and babes with winter flu can really put a damper on enjoying Rome. So glad things are looking up and the adventures are back on. Frankie looks so much more grown up in the few months since you last were there- really shows how fast time flies. It must be so interesting to wander around Rome with a toddler and such fun! Looking forward to hearing more!
It's true — even though I last saw Frankie 3 1/2 months ago, she seems so much older now. She's got a rapidly increasing vocabulary, speaks in simple sentences, and of course is very mobile. So glad I got to be here to see this stage, fleeting as it will be.
Keep well and enjoy yourself! Write as much or as little as you want. Your readers will wait, we know it's worth it.
Hear, hear!
Thanks, you two! đ
Long distance grandparenting can be a tough call. I'm glad you are enjoying your family in Rome now that the travel trials and tribulations are behind you.
That opera set looks so pretty I wanted to paint a room like that.
It is a tough call, indeed, and I'm so glad I've had the privilege of closing the gap a bit.
And isn't that just the prettiest colour combination/balance of setting and costumes? A room in those colours would be joyful and sophisticated, I'm sure.
There's bound to be some adjustment, given the time zones and stress of travel, and now you are there. Bouncing back quickly, given the demands!
I do think I bounced pretty quickly — the rewards justified the cost of fatigue, etc. As long as I don't make myself sick, I can put off some of the self-care until I'm back home. Making the most of precious time together.
Enjoy your time with your Roman family!
How nice to receive a postcard! 'Couldn't have been a more perfect day' is really the best anyone could want, isn't it?
Right? Right!! đ
Like Georgia said…lovely to receive a "postcard." Enjoy your time. And I find it's so much more satisfying to write those travel posts when you get back home…. sunny morning, cup of tea at your elbow, writing about and relishing your moments abroad.
Good point, Susan. I sometimes worry that by the time I get home it's all old news, but from my readers' perspective, that's not necessarily true, and it will be enjoyable for me to revisit and reflect.
Not meager at all – a lovely post, with the desired insiders views of Rome, a darling toddler and beaming mother-daughter duo. Perfect!
Oh, thanks for seeing it this way. I did wonder if it was even worth posting, but had to wave out to all of you . . .
It sounds as though you had a tiring journey but I'm sure that the opportunity to spend time with your Roman family is worth it. Frankie sure looks like you! Enjoy your time and the sunny days.
Can you see a resemblance between Frankie and I? I'm delighted to hear it! We do share a name, sort of. . .
Have a lovely time with your family đ not that you need any instruction for that. Mismatched travel is so frustrating when there is a prize at the end
Exactly — it's the sense that the airline (or whatever is causing the delay) is stealing my limited time, part of my prize! But I am definitely managing to have a lovely time with the family, thanks!
No! This post is a feast for the eyes with all the lovely photos and word that you are getting over jet lag and enjoying time with family! That first shot especially is calling out to me to get out my passport.
There's something about those bike shots that does call out, isn't there? Is it the latent promise of movement, the hint of wanderlust? I can't ever resist a casually posed bike, leaning against a European wall, somehow. . .
Have a lovely time with your family đ not that you need any instruction for that. Mismatched travel is so frustrating when there is a prize at the end
Everything's well that ends well! Glad to have a postcard! There is time to enjoy and time to write about!
Enjoy your Rome (Frankie is so grown up!) ,your family, beautiful runs and walks
Great evening in theatre ,I've never seen La Cenerentola!
We'll be patient!
I am home again
Dottoressa
It was my first time for La Cenerentola as well.
I hope you had a lovely time in London — it went quickly, didn't it?!
A feast for the eyes. Enjoy your time together. Words will find their own paths when the time is right.
Nicely put, thank you. The words do seem to tumble out when it's time.
Precious granddaughter, beautiful daughter! Have a wonderful visit!!
Thanks! I'm doing my best. đ
Looks like you are living life to the full. Make the most of every moment. Absolutely loving all your photos. An injection of warmth into our damp winter. Barbara X
So glad these are warming you up. There's a Rainfall Warning back home today — almost funny given how used we are to rain, except that the potential for damage isn't amusing. Stay dry!
