I’ve been busy coughing, sneezing, and just generally ploughing through boxes of Kleenex here, but I realize it’s been a full week since that double teaser of a post, And I’d better quickly follow through on one item, at least.
I’m not quite up to modelling my new cropped wide-legged jeans, but they’re all over the Web if you only Google Citizens of Humanity, Melanie. So I did that for you, took a screen shot, et voilà!
I’m really looking forward to wearing these (with heels, with flats, with boots to my knee, with ankle boots). In fact, they’d have made their street debut already except that I came home with a size that demanded all breath be expelled from my body in order to close the zipper. The young sales assistant (who had first guessed me at a size 24! Ha! An obvious flattery sales technique that should have rung more alarm bells) convinced me they would stretch, and I tried them on a few times at home in a frantic effort to believe her. Luckily, Common Sense wrested the reins back in time for me to exchange them for the last remaining pair in my real size.
Have you hopped on the flared or cropped or wide-legged denim bandwagon yet? Contemplating jumping on? And please tell me you, too, have foolishly succumbed to the convictions of a sweet young thing in making your wardrobe selections, only coming to your senses later, with shame or embarrassment…. Or just throw all sympathy to the wind and laugh at the poor woman with the cold who actually paid big bucks for a too-small-for-her pair of jeans. Go on, I won’t hear you…
Oh there is no comfort in too tight jeans…that translates to sheer torture.
It was lucky that there was a pair left in your "real size" now you can breathe!
Sorry to hear that you are under the weather with this nasty cold…my sister spent 2 weeks in Palm Springs with this cold and is still sick…take care and keep cozy. These windstorms can chill you to the core.
I will look forward to seeing those new pants on you….I tried a pair last year…wore them a couple of times before consigning them. I am only 5"1 so they swamped me…
I'm in danger of being swamped as well, at just 5'3"ish, but I like the way these look nonetheless — I think it helps that they're really fitted through to the thigh — They give good butt!! 😉
Hi Mater, I have to be honest – I don't think I would wear those jeans. I don't really like wide legs – I had a couple of pairs of cord flares a few years ago and all that flapping around used to annoy me! However, I'm interested to see how you style them. Get well soon!
It's so personal, isn't it? Some trends we're best just to ignore. I've always loved the romance of a wide leg (Katherine Hepburn!), but didn't want to contend with the impracticality of so much fabric dragging in our rainy climate. The cropped length, I'm hoping, will obviate this problem, but we'll see. . .
I bought a pair of really wide linen pants in Britain and never did wear them at home. I really try to wear a bit looser fit just because I feel more comfortable. Sorry to hear that you are sick. My walking buddy had it for ten days. Get well!
I did the same with a pair of wide white linen pants I bought in Paris — they just didn't translate to island life, altho' I think I'd have worn them more if I were in the city. Thanks for the get-well wishes. . . I'm on the mend.
Have them in soft, lightweight denim for summer; wear like top middle shot. So easy to move in. (They look a bit odd here in winter, when our glacial winds whip wide legs furiously and send cold air straight up.) I would not wear them with heels, but only wear heels with a dressy dress, and that's about twice a year!
Have fun, and never feel bad about buying what fits, size on the tag be damned.
I love that styling, and suspect this is what I'll end up doing quite a bit. Can imagine how useless they'd be in Montreal winters though. As for the heels, for me that will most likely be heeled boots, which I do wear fairly often.
And I'm absolutely in agreement about the size on the tag, although I did almost make a serious error . . . 😉
I've not been interested in the wide legged denim (or any) pant yet. But then I never really adopted the skinny legs, either. A classic straight leg, or perhaps a boot cut is what I'm comfortable with in pants. Skirts – now that's another story.
I'm sorry you've been ill. There's a lot of illness about just now. Hot tea, hot soup, rest and staying warm are the tickets. And time. That's the tricky part.
It's good to know what you like, and it's wonderful that we don't seem pressured to choose one or another silhouette anymore. . . (I love skirts as well — which is part of the appeal of these jeans, actually).
And I'm much better today, thanks — such a difference having the time to rest rather than having papers to mark!

I could absolutely see you in these jeans, and you'd do some amazing styling with them, I know, whereas I'm going to be tempted to counteract their wild with a bit of discipline. We'll see.

About the jeans:I have a pair of cropped flares (Benetton),they look nice in photos,I'm tall but not so sure yet do I like them on me or not!
So clever of you to change the size,they have to be comfortable. I always buy the size up and then my seamstress adjust it for me. Do you have seamstresses for adjustments? I guess a lot of you can DIY
I acctually never had real pair of skinny jeans,like leggins ,more very firm straight leg,or straight leg or bootcut
I have linen or cord wide leg trousers and like to wear them a lot

Interesting that you always buy a size up and then have garments tailored — probably a great way to get a perfect fit. We do have seamstresses to adjust, but it's hit and miss to find a good one. I used to sew fairly well, but there's a fair bit of work to adjusting jeans and I'm reluctant to pay the high price of designer jeans and then risk them to scissors and sewing machine …
I also love that the pants are named after me. Hee hee.

These are adorable – I'd totally wear them! But I think of them as gauchos (high rise, crotch seam is close to the body and the flare is tapered / length is short).
Yes! That's exactly how I think of them and why they appealed to me so much.
Yes, I would wear them, and I too think of them as gauchos. I wore them when they were fashionable before, and when they weren't here, inspired by a trip to Spain where they were fashionable on all the young women (I was still young then as well). Now I would wear them, but haven't gotten a pair yet. I am editing, and waiting, and editing some more, in a mood too seek out the necessary sartorial kernel, before branching out again. But even if I am at the end of the trend, when I am ready, I will indulge and wear these, as they are one of those life-long favorites, that I am no longer afraid to make my own.

I had pairs in the 0s, early 90s and loved them. Like you, I've been editing and waiting and these were worth breaking my fast for — I hope to be wearing them for years to come, no matter their fashionability, like you.
Oh…I haven't been able to make that leap yet. I saw that Sue at Une Femme did so last week. I just can't get the image of bell bottom jeans that are too short, with the hems let down, so you get the colour stripes on the bottom, and it's clear that you had to let the hem of your jeans down. An anathema when I was in high school. And I know I'm not in high school anymore…haha… not for over 40 years… and I should get that image out of my head. I'm working on it. I think I might, maybe, sometime be able to go for cropped flares without that "let down hem" look and with high boots. We'll see.

The only good thing about getting a cold this time of year is… at least you don't have to sneeze and mark papers at the same time. Oh the luxury of getting sick and not having to worry about your classes! Feel better soon, Frances.
Too funny that you and Ceri have this memory, a tall girl's memory. Mine was the opposite problem, having to hem the pants by at least two inches, knowing that would ruin the shape of the "bell" at the bottom.
These are me in so many ways (just iconoclastic enough, imho, but still in a classic genre–the jean, the gaucho). A pant that's dramatic enough but not a print or a colour so that I can wear it with everything.
It is a luxury, truly, the ability to just be sick without having to worry about papers and invigilating exams and collating marks….
Like Susan I've got too many memories of battling with standard length jeans which came an inch too short. Always. So I won't be giving this look a go. I do love the Hepburn wide legged trouser look though but is it just my eye or do they only suit those with really slim bottom halves? I find a chunky thigh draped in excess fabric is not a good look on me. Hope the lurgy is on its way now.
It might be that I can wear these because I do have a fairly slim bottom half, but there's actually not an excess of fabric until the top of the thigh.
See above to Susan re my amusement that you and she and other tall girls were letting out hems while I was perennially having to hem mine… (oh, and there was SO much fabric to hem in those bellbottoms — elephant pants as we also called them — perhaps that's why I love that these have a raw hem . . . 😉
How much above your ankle are you planning to wear them? I have a pair of very wide-legged Eileen Fisher pants that I want to re-hem for the spring for a similar look.
They land not too much above my ankle — enough, though, to keep them out of puddles! I'll try to get a photo of me wearing them, soon.
