Sunday Evening Comforts of Home

Thanks for all who expressed concern in tweets or comments below — we felt no earthquake here, and for now, the only tsunami’s the one that blew through in the form of houseguests — a very enjoyable form, that is, although not a quiet one!

All’s back in place now. Winter curtains have been hung, and thered, white, and blue of summer pillows exchanged for the warmer tones that comfort against the dreary grey rain outside. This is where I’ve been sitting since everyone left this afternoon — I’m working my way through that stack of papers you seen on the ottoman, bottom right. . . and remembering the pleasures of helping my daughter knit her first sock, watching my son-in-law whip up Eggs Benny for us all, and imagining how thrilled Nola will be to hug her Mom and Dad after the week apart.

Last weekend in Vancouver, I spotted these cushions in CB2 and bought them to freshen up the winter collection here — only when I snapped this photo did I realize how perfectly they echo the painting above them, my friend Alison’s Broken Forest, better seen in this post.

So I’m ensconced in cheering fabrics, visual and textural pleasures all around. I look back on a rich week, a bit too busy, yes, but full of good fortune. I enjoyed the opera, remembered Paris windows my granddaughter could love, took time to appreciate the wildlife surrounding me, and enjoyed spending time with visiting family.

Now I think I’ll curl up to watch the malevolence of Glenn Close’s lawyer character in Damages, relaxing before the onslaught of another busy week. I hope you’ve enjoyed your weekend as well and are almost ready for the week ahead. What are you remembering or looking forward to this Sunday night?

Remembering? Cosy hours by the fire.
Looking forward? To next weekend in Tofino (and thankful that we didn't plan for this weekend)

i'm looking forward to some solitude – mr ebb's away on business this week; my evenings are my own (once i've dealt with bedtime …)

given the bedtime travails, that solitude might be hard-won . . . so even more a luxury when you settle into it, right?

I'm looking forward to the third episode of the new Upstairs Downstairs.
I must look into "winter" drapes for my home. They are fabulous looking. So cozy!!

I've never watched the show — nor Downton Abbey. One of these years. . .
As for the drapes, ours are just Ikea, but I do love the rich colour.

Comfort is all-important to me in furnishings — given our long, long, dreary, rainy season, it really matters. I know you agree!

Those cushions are so cheery! I'm so glad to hear you didn't experience any damage or problems as a result of the earthquake.

      Any tremors up your way?

After three weeks of intensive company, some of it of the looking after variety (a week of my parents, a week of my brother) and some of the holiday with friends variety ( a few days in Berlin) I am looking forward to being at home and some time to myself.

It is remarkable to me how the colors of the curtains and the cushions change this room. And, yes, I'm glad that no waves came your way. I was a nervous wreck about you.
